We have all heard of the importance of perseverance. Winners persist in their goals in a very determined way that exceeds what many would be willing to do.
But we also have heard the saying “doing the same thing over and over and expecting a new result is insanity”.
So how do you know when to change course? When are you giving up and not persevering? When are you stubbornly persevering in a way that will never succeed.
The answer to those questions are often more easily answered in hindsight. We don’t know if our lack of success at a particular endeavor is that we just need to keep at it longer or if it is the result of a flawed plan.
I don’t really have the answer to this. I do have a guideline on eliminating some of the questions, but not all of them.
We should persevere on our overall objectives, then persevere on strategy and last of all on tactics. Another way of looking at this, is that we should be more willing to change tactics first, then perhaps our strategy second, long before we would give up on overall objective.
